Good morning! The big topic of the day, and will remain to be, are the extremely dry conditions across East Tennessee/the region and the wildfires which have resulted. Looking at the on-going fire map below, you can see SEVERAL wildfires in Kentucky, the Virginia's, portions of East Tennessee, and North Carolina. There does not look to be a true end in sight, as last nights rain into this morning did very little to anything to mitigate. The one positive are the cooler temperatures and brief recovery in moisture in the air (today and this weekend). Much drier air mass then filters back in early next week. Our next shot at meaningful rainfall won't arrive until a week out (towards next Friday). Please obey local burn bans and fire laws, and if possible, limit any burning altogether. Fires can quickly get out of control in such a dry environment we are in, as this compares to the drought we faced in 2016 and the historic wildfires we saw in the Smokies. So looking at the drought, it should not come as a surprise that it has gotten worse. Looking across the southern valley, we are now at the highest grade of drought we can be in: exceptional. Elsewhere, extreme and severe drought remain. I expect for this to continue to get worse again in the next release, before a more active pattern sets up mid to late month- hopefully dumping some healthy rains across the region. Here is an image we captured on a local webcam last night depicting a few areas of spotty fires in the Smokies. Aside from the drought and wildfires, the weekend looks more or less cloudy. A few isolated showers/sprinkles will be possible through early this afternoon, followed by a very low end chance of rain tomorrow and Sunday. High pressure then brings dry weather and much better sunshine early to mid next week. Temperatures will also warm back up into the low and mid 60s during this time. Have a good one, stay safe, and happy Veterans Day! Pre-recorded for 5pm weather broadcast
Record or near-record highs today, with most topping out in the low 80s. Clouds then increase into tonight, with shower chances increasing through Thursday and into Friday. Lingering showers will then be possible early Saturday, before another passing disturbance brings scattered chances midday Sunday. Check out our video forecast below for more. Good morning! High pressure remains dominant across the Deep South and that will contribute to a warm air mass not only today but also tomorrow. As a result, we are looking at near-record highs. A few clouds will pass through at times as well, but expect plenty of sunshine in total. The records are as follows: Today Oak Ridge: 80 degrees Knoxville: 79 degrees Wednesday (the 8th) Oak Ridge: 80 degrees Knoxville: 81 degrees Please reach out if you would like official records for other sites across the area or region. Currently, a frontal boundary is stalled out along the Ohio River. A low pressure system is expected to develop along the boundary on the lee side of the Rockies, forcing the front north as a warm front. As a result, even warmer air will be on tap for Wednesday, with highs pushing the upper 70s to low 80s. Now, the good news! As the low pressure systems moves east, an attendant cold front will take aim at the region. Clouds increase beginning Wednesday night (also gusty winds tomorrow night), then a gradual increase in shower chances. Rain chances will be very low Wednesday night into Thursday, but picking up sharply by Thursday night into Friday. Lingering showers will remain possible on Veterans Day, before drier air fills back in on Sunday. Overall, rainfall amounts are sufficient but by far not enough to counter the drought we have. Amounts between 0.25 and 0.75" are expected across all of East Tennessee. So what do longer term outlooks point to? Another very warm air mass, but also a chance at some additional rainfall. A sharp ridge/high pressure will fill next week, leading to dry and warm air. As this breaks down into the middle of the month, where better rainfall chances will present themselves, and we will keep our fingers crossed this brings above average precipitation amounts. Several wildfires have been reported and seen across East Tennessee so far this month as a result of the very dry conditions. Please do not burn and follow all local burn bans and laws that are in place. We are in need of lots of rain, and we'll see a taste of that later in the work week but hope for more to come, thereafter. Pre-recorded for 5pm weather broadcast
Mostly dry conditions continue to start off the new work week, but there is some positives in sight. A slow moving cold front will slide south the later half of the work week, bringing some much needed rainfall to the area. Until then though, very warm air will be settled across East Tennessee, where new records will even be possible Tuesday and Wednesday. Check out our full video forecast below for more information. A frigid start across East Tennessee, with many at 8 am in the low 20s to near 30 degrees. To make it worse, even colder temperatures are planned tonight into Thursday morning, so be ready to bundle back up once more! The good news is plenty of sunshine is forecast today through the early weekend, with highs trending warmer each day as well. Today will be our coolest, with highs in the mid and upper 40s, followed by 50s tomorrow, 60s Friday & Saturday, and even some 70s on Sunday. Speaking of that warmer air, the graphic below depicts average highs to those of which the model thinks we could see. As highlighted above, a big warm up is in store the next few days, thanks to high pressure settling east of the area. Today will be much below average, but we'll veer 5 to 8 degrees above average by Saturday....Usual Tennessee weather, am I right? Take advantage of the sunshine and warming temperatures. After Thursday, it should be nice and mild. Our next chance of rainfall arrives early next week, where we could see a decent shot of precipitation amounts. Let's hope it pans out, as we are running well below average for soil moisture/precipitation and the results are moderate and severe drought state-wide.
