Some good news to start the week in terms of the recent drought development. We have had plenty of rainfall across the eastern half of Tennessee, specifically East Tennessee. Looking below, the past 7 days we have recorded anywhere from 1.5 inches up to 5" across the northern Plateau and Valley. This is good news as many locations across our neck of the woods were running abnormally dry. Unfortunately, West TN saw very little rainfall and will likely continue their climb into a severe drought. Additional good news today, temperatures are right on par with averages. The muggy meter is also much lower today, making things feel a little more pleasant than they have in recent weeks. Take advantage because that quickly changes tomorrow and Wednesday. Highs today should top out around 90, with low 90s tomorrow afternoon. In terms of rainfall potential ahead, a cold front will slowly work in from our north and west. As it does so, isolated shower and storm chances will creep in later tomorrow, before scattered showers and storms find us Wednesday. The bulk of activity will come the first half of the day Wednesday, before clearing finds the area into Thursday. A few isolated stronger storms can't be ruled out Wednesday, but severe chances are very low. Cooler temperatures will also follow the front, bringing upper 80s Thursday and to around 90 on Friday. Overall, once cloud cover thins out today, it will be pleasant. Limited shower/storm chances will be present tomorrow, with better chances Tuesday night and into Wednesday. Another shot of cooler air and dry conditions then return Thursday and all of Friday. Have a good week and don't forget to reach out to us for any of your business needs. Pre-recorded for 5pm show
A heat advisory is in effect again today as the combination of low 90s and high humidity will lead to feel like temperatures in the lower 100s. Be grateful, as West TN and KY have peaked out as high as 115-120 in recent days. Thankfully, a cold front will work through tonight and Saturday, bringing mid to upper 80s across the area. As far as rainfall, isolated showers/storms are possible today, but chances increase tonight and into Saturday with the approaching frontal boundary. In terms of severe potential, timing is on our side. The overnight timing will aid in lessoning the amount of energy storms can use. With that said, still can't rule out strong wind gusts as the line works through. Heavy downpours will also be a concern. Given the heavy rainfall at times this week, some locations will be more prone to flash flooding through tonight and into Saturday. By Sunday, any lingering showers/storms will slowly work out, leaving dry conditions Sunday night and into the new work week. As an average, rainfall amounts today through Sunday morning will be in the 1 to 1.5" range. This is good news for some, as many in Middle and West Tennessee are dealing with drought. Even so, the better potential is from roughly Nashville and east. This should really help a large portion of the state recover a bit. Severe potential is low but not ruled out tonight. Strong to damaging wind gusts will still be possible as well as flooding/flash flooding. Drier and cooler conditions will arrive briefly Sunday, before warming conditions return early next week. Jumping right into it, the lack of rainfall across portions of the state have really taken a toll. Looking at the latest state drought map, southwestern TN is now in a severe drought, while the remainder of the west is in a moderate drought. This is all while East Tennessee sees mainly normal to abnormally dry conditions. Even so, there is a few pockets of moderate drought, where showers and storms have been lacking. Thankfully, a sweeping cold front will bring widespread rainfall late Friday and into Saturday, but this may not be enough for West TN to catch up. It is important to also note, the bulk of the rainfall over the next 7 days will be across the Plateau and east. This is something we will continue to watch, as this plays a big role in agriculture, fire hazards, and more. Swinging back into things for today, a slight risk of severe storms encompasses a large part of the state. We have already seen scattered showers and a few rumbles of thunder this morning, but this will again pick back up into this afternoon and early evening. Some activity could be strong to severe, with isolated instances of flash flooding as well. Stay alert and know what to do if a warning is issued for your area. In addition to the showers & storms today, a cold front will push southeast through the day tomorrow, bringing better rainfall chances late Friday and into the early weekend. Again, some of these could contain stronger storms within, but the chances of severe weather are generally lower given the timing. With that said, isolated flash flooding remains possible, especially for areas that have seen repeated rainfall so far this week. By Sunday afternoon, showers should be exiting the area, providing a much needed relief from the heat and humidity. This will carry into portions of Monday as well, before things return to the warm and muggy conditions we have been experiencing. Pre-recorded for 5pm show
First things first, a heat advisory has been issued for today, as heat indices will peak out between 100 and 105. Temperatures themselves will find the low to mid 90s, so keep heat safety a top priority. Given the heat and muggy conditions, this is a prime environment for showers & storms to develop in. Because of this, a slight risk of severe storms is in place today and will be in place again tomorrow. Given the lack of true forcing and support in the upper levels, storms will be slow moving but strong at times. As such, heavy downpours can be expected in these storms, warranting the opportunity for flash flooding. This is highlighted by the Marginal & Slight risk of flash flooding (bottom right). In terms of severe hazards, damaging wind gusts is the main threat, but isolated instances of large hail will also be possible. Keep in mind as well, Thursday will almost be a carbon copy of today, with showers storms developing in the afternoon and some becoming strong to severe. Have a way to receive alerts and know what to do if severe or hydro related warnings are issued. Looking at model guidance, it is hard to say who and where activity will be seen. Given the lack of true forcing, showers and storms will be quite "random". Some may see activity, while others miss it entirely (welcome to summer, huh). I can say though, those that do see activity will at least see heavy rain and gusty winds. Some areas are still in much need of rainfall, so hopefully some of these storms work through these locations. Overall, hit and miss showers/storms will be the trend today and tomorrow. A cold front will then build in Friday and the weekend, bringing another bout of strong to severe storms and widespread activity. Have a way to receive alerts the next few days as well as keep your heat safety in mind! Pre-recorded for 5pm show
Good afternoon! I hope you enjoyed the extra long weekend. As we swing back into things, showers & storms will remain possible each and every day. Specifically, during the afternoon to early evening time period. The surface map (below) depicts a frontal boundary well to our north. This will dip southward tonight, bringing a better opportunity for strong to severe storms to develop tomorrow afternoon. Both the SPC and WPC highlight the chance for hazards. First, the Storm Prediction Center portioned off part of East Tennessee with a slight risk of severe storms, while the remainder sits in a Marginal. The main threats tomorrow will be damaging wind gusts, but instances of large hail in stronger storms will also be possible. Keep in mind this activity as a whole will be very scattered (or hit and miss). In addition to the severe threat, isolated instances of flash flooding is also possible, as suggested by the Marginal risk from the Weather Prediction Center. Lastly, it is Summer so you can expect warm and muggy conditions. As seen from this single model below, heat indices will range between 100 and 105 tomorrow and Thursday afternoon. Keep cool, hydrated, and safe both from the heat and the storm potential! Overall, today will be partly cloudy with isolated storm chances this afternoon. Highs will range in the low 90s, with overnight lows in the low and mid 70s. Stay safe tomorrow afternoon, as a few storms could be strong to severe as the day heats up. Pre-recorded for 5pm show
