Very cold temperatures to start off the morning, with many between -5 and 5 degrees. Wind chills values are closer to -10 degrees, but warmer air is forthcoming. We will see highs reach the mid and upper 20s today, with upper 30s to near 40 degrees possible tomorrow. This is only temporary though, as another cold arctic blast arrives Friday into the weekend. A tricky system will bring a rain or freezing rain mix initially Thursday evening/night (thanks to a column of warm air aloft), transitioning to all snow late in the night/early Friday morning. As such, a concern for slick road ways/light icing is possible- especially with linger snow/ice from our most recent system. Snowfall will be minimal, generally a dusting across the valley to 1-2" in the higher plateau to foothills terrain. Stay tuned for further updates with this tricky system and stay warm! Snowfall overachieved thanks to a better tap into moisture across the area. This led to an area-wide 4-8," with locally higher amounts eastward toward the foothills and north into NE Tennessee. Lesser amounts were seen in the south/southeast with a strip of 1-4" noted. Nonetheless, the next phase of this system is the very cold air and wind chill/feel-like temperatures expected. We will also see another opportunity for a wintry mix or snow Thursday into Friday. Check out our video forecast below for all the details. Video Created at 7:15 AM
Rounds of snow showers will continue today, before tapering off into night. Temperatures will be cold, not only today, but throughout the work week. Another, very low and light, probability for snow finds us Thursday into Friday. Don't forget to send us your snow pictures through social media or under our "News & More" tab. Good morning! Lots to touch on the next couple of days, so we'll jump right to it. There is a low-end severe risk for storms this afternoon to early evening, with the timing of highest showers and a few storms 12pm to 5pm. Strong to damaging wind gusts within storms or heavy showers is the primary threat. Outside of thunderstorms altogether, winds will be gusty today. A wind advisory is in place through 7 am EST Saturday for the valley, as gusts of 40 to even 50 mph are possible. Those in the plateau could see gusts of 40 to 60 mph, and the Smokies are off the chart readings, pushing 80+ mph. The highest wind gusts will come late this afternoon/evening and into tonight. Aside from the gusty winds threat, both in and outside of showers/storms, highs today will be seasonably pleasant, topping out in the low to mid 50s. Enjoy those as you can this afternoon, as MUCH colder air is en route late weekend and throughout much of next week. Confidence continues to grow in the threat of wintry precipitation next week. As it appears now, two bouts of snowfall are possible (more on this below). Looking at the threat for at least minor driving impacts, a 40-50% is in place across East Tennessee, meaning there could be numerous slick spots if you are planning to be on the roadways MLK Jr. Day and through midweek. And now, drum roll....Here is our first official snowfall forecast. We wanted to get this in before the weekend so you can plan for travel concerns, potential closures, holiday plans, etc for early next week. We will emphasize the fact this is likely to change, but this is our best guess as of this morning. As touched on above, there will be two periods of note. First Sunday night through Monday, light snowfall accumulations within scattered snow showers are possible. The better bet comes Monday afternoon through Tuesday evening, where better snowfall rates and more consistent activity is forecast. Altogether though, the map below depicts our expectations (Sunday night through Tuesday night). Here is our breakdown Sunday night through Tuesday night: Valley: 1-3" more uncertainty south of I-40 Plateau: 2-4" with higher amounts possible Foothills: 3-6" with higher amounts possible Smokies: 4-8" with higher amounts on the steeper terrain Keep in mind CHANGES ARE LIKELY, this is just a first guess. The biggest question marks are on the amount of available moisture, which impacts how much snowfall we could see. Temperatures will be sufficiently cold enough for snow overall, it's a matter of the residence time of each system and the moisture associated. Tune back for further updates! The biggest threat next week, by far, will be the VERY cold air. An Arctic air mass is expected to settle in post snow, bringing the coldest air of the season so far, and potential record temperatures. Highs may struggle to top 30 degrees Monday- Wednesday, with overnight lows in the teens to single digits. Wind chills of single digits or sub-zero are likely. Snow on the ground could further the cooler temperatures, so prepare now for very cold values. Video Created As Of 9:45 AM 1/12/24
A few strong storms are possible tomorrow afternoon, with damaging wind gusts the primary threat. The chances are low, but not ruled out. The bigger risk will be in gusty winds throughout Friday and into early Saturday morning. Gusts up to 40 or even 50 mph are possible, with higher gusts in the steeper terrain. Following the exit of our next system Saturday afternoon, briefly drier conditions find us Sunday. A wintry system then presses through, where light snowfall accumulations are possible Sunday night through Tuesday morning. At this time, confidence remains medium for at least light accumulations across East Tennessee. The biggest threat will come in temperatures. Highs could struggle to top the 30 mark Monday through Wednesday, with overnight lows in the teens to single digits. Additionally, wind chills could feel closer to zero or even below. Stay tuned for a full update, including snowfall totals/potential tomorrow. Pre-recorded for 5pm weather broadcast Light Snowfall Possible Late Sunday Night Through Tuesday Morning
We will have a very active weather pattern over the next 7 days, with our first system passing through today. Widespread rainfall, breezy winds, and even wintry mix tonight into early Wednesday morning is planned, with a very similar system Friday into Saturday. Like today, widespread rain, breezy winds, and some tail-end brief wintry weather is possible Friday into the start of the weekend. We will also note a third system, this one of the winter variety, possible early next week. Confidence in the details as of now is low, but something we are eyeing very closely. Of note, accumulating snow is possible, as well as very cold temperatures much of next week. Check out our video forecast and graphic below for more details. Recorded as of 10 am 1/9/24
A very active and unsettled weather pattern will begin tonight, with several bouts of rainfall, some wintry mix, and gusty winds at times through at least early next week. Check out our video forecast below for more details. Pre-recorded for 5pm weather broadcast
Clouds increase today, as mainly rainfall arrives overnight and through Saturday. Showers, associated with a second disturbance, will taper off into Sunday morning with drier air filling in through Monday. We will even see a fair amount of sunshine the first half of the day Monday, before another disturbance arrives Monday night into Tuesday. This later one will be quite strong, bringing widespread rain, possibly a few rumbles of thunder, and very breezy winds. Sustained winds between 15 and 25 mph are possible, with gusts between 30 and 45 mph. The higher terrain could achieve much higher winds, with all expectations a high wind warning is issued for the peaks of the Smokies Monday night. Check out our video forecast below for the full run down. Video forecast valid at 8:15 am
We will see increasing sunshine through the day, but temperatures will remain chilly thanks to our most recent front and cloud cover this morning. Moving ahead, several passing disturbances will bring precipitation chances starting late Friday and lasting at times through early Sunday morning. Yet another, and much stronger system, will find us Monday into Tuesday. Breezy conditions expected with the later system. Check out our video forecast for more details: Time recorded: 8:00 am
